Anti-Racism Education and Training for Adult Mentors Who Work With BIPOC Adolescents

Racism and White supremacy culture shape the experiences of youth adults in mentoring programs, which is detrimental to development BIPOC youth. The aims this paper are a) show why anti-racism training education for adult mentors necessary promoting positive b) offer a framework anti-racist mentors. We review research showing how mentors’ attitudes about race, ethnicity can harm their relationships with on general mentor training, mentors, diversity anti-bias workplace. Crossing disciplinary boundaries inform developmental science, we draw upon critical mentoring, culturally relevant sustaining pedagogy, ethnic/racial identity frameworks, propose four components mentors: acknowledging, confronting, interrupting racism, facilitating consciousness, c) supporting youth, d) mentees as active agents partners. At foundation these pillars decentering Whiteness co-constructors knowledge. suggestions future practice also have implications youth-adult across settings.
